Ireland's Century of Rebellion

The 1800s dawned in Ireland right after the bloody uprising of 1798 was brutally suppressed by the British. The century was roiled by a series of rebellions, and was also marked by the single greatest watershed in Irish history, the Great Famine of the 1840s.
Ireland's Big Wind
A freak wind storm struck Ireland in January 1839, and became known as the "Big Wind." It was so memorable that decades later, bureaucrats determining who was eligible for old age pensions would ask people if they could remember "The Big Wind."
Irish History in the 1800s
The 19th century dawned in Ireland in the wake of the widespread uprising of 1798, which was brutally suppressed by the British. That revolutionary spirit would reverberate in Ireland throughout the 1800s.
