The New York Tribune was Attacked by Rioters in 1863

The New York Tribune, the pro-Lincoln newspaper edited by the legendary Horace Greeley, was attacked during the New York Draft Riots.

The mobs attacking government officials and blacks also had another target, those who supported the policies of Abraham Lincoln. A choice target was the New York Tribune, the pro-Lincoln paper edited by Horace Greeley.

An enormous mob marched to the offices of the Tribune in lower Manhattan, but were successfully fought off. Legend has it that Gatling guns, which had only recently been manufactured and issued to the US Army, had been provided to the newspaper and were placed in the windows of the Tribune building.
