There were reports that the mobs of angry workers who had burned the draft offices had somehow obtained weapons, and quickly became an armed and very dangerous force.

A pitched battle between rioters and police is the subject of this dramatic magazine illustration. While the artist may have embellished the scene, there were many eyewitness accounts of such skirmishes in the streets of New York during the days of rioting.
