Phineas Barnum, depicted here in his office, kept to a very busy schedule, and was known for paying close attention to all aspects of his business. He personally taught young Charlie Stratton to sing and dance as General Tom Thumb, and he studied the daily receipts for his museum.
Besides running his business, Barnum also wrote several books of advice and memoirs, and at times dabbled in politics, even corresponding with President Lincoln. Barnum exhibited fairly enlightened attitudes about slavery, which he opposed.
Late in his life, Barnum served as the mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
