The term "Know-Nothing" was actually a nickname, earned because the party had clandestine roots and members, if asked if they belonged, were instructed to answer, "I know nothing."
The party's official name was the Order of the Star-Spangled Banner, and later the American Party. It emerged from the remains of the Whig Party, and peaked by electing 40 Congressman in 1854. Within a few years it faded into disarray and obscurity.
