Code Duello

By Robert McNamara, About.com

Definition: The Code Duello was the name for rules of dueling which were drawn up in the west of Ireland in 1777. These dueling rules came to be followed in Ireland and in Britain, and were also adopted by Americans.

The terms of the Code Duello were thus the standard rules followed in 19th century duels.

The rules begin by specifying that the parties with a disagreement may apologize and avoid the duel. But if the parties wish to have a duel, then there were a number of rules specifying such things as when a challenge was to be issued and how the guns used in the duel are to be fired.
